4:53 p.m. Monday — Steven P. Cowan, 56, of Prospect was caught allegedly shoplifting $181 worth of merchandise from the Giant Eagle store at Moraine Pointe Plaza. Cowan is charged with retail theft.2:43 a.m. Saturday — Jamie A. Broerman, 42, of Evans City and Stacy Bastian, 42, of Renfrew both were cited after police found Broerman under the influence while walking on Route 68 and Bastian following him in a vehicle. Broerman is charged with public drunkenness and Bastian is charged with driving with a suspended license.

1 a.m. today — A Keltec 9 mm rifle and two archery bows were found in a ditch on the side of Rocks Road in Fairview Township. A black gun case also was found.The two archery items are a Matthews Solocam compound bow and a Barnett Quad 400 Camo cross bow. The owner or owners can claim the property by calling police at 724-284-8100.4:46 p.m. Tuesday — A pickup truck driven by Scott G. Hughes, 51, of Butler caught fire on Patterson Road just north of Bullcreek Road in Jefferson Township. Moments before the fire, Hughes told police the pickup's clutch malfunctioned.Hughes was able to get out safely. But while flames engulfed the truck, it drifted backward for about 200 yards and struck a small ditch and tree.The Saxonburg Volunteer Fire Department assisted police at the scene.5:32 a.m. Tuesday — An unidentified man was hurt when the car he was driving sideswiped a tractor-trailer on Route 8 in Clay Township. Authorities said the man was southbound when he apparently crossed the center line and hit the rig that was traveling north.The man was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital with minor to moderate injuries.A police report was not available this morning and the names of the drivers were not immediately known.West Sunbury and Unionville volunteer firefighters assisted at the scene.Monday — Police charged Jeffery T. Chapman, 27, of West Sunbury with illegally trying to have a pistol transferred to his name June 24 at Tommy Guns on West Lane in Brady Township.Chapman is charged with unlawfully attempting to transfer a firearm and unsworn falsification to authorities.Thursday — Vincent Lee Nielsen, 45, of Butler Township was charged with threatening to shoot his brother and other family members in Clearfield Township Sept. 3. Nielsen is charged with terroristic threats, harassment and disorderly conduct.Thursday — Police charged Gennie K. Gibson, 36, of Clay Township with lying on a federal application April 23 to buy a .22-caliber rifle at Sportsman's Supply on Route 356 in Summit Township.The Pennsylvania Instant Check system, an automated system by which gun dealers can determine if someone can legally buy a gun in the state, denied the purchase, according to court documents.Gibson is charged with making a false written statement to authorities.

5 p.m. Monday — Brittany E. Mitchell, 18, of Ford City allegedly shoplifted several clothing items at the Hilltop Plaza Walmart in East Franklin Township. She is accused of exchanging those same items for a store gift card. Police said Mitchell is charged with retail theft.1:30 p.m. Sunday — Jeffrey Hodgson, 48, of Kittanning was arrested after he allegedly assaulted a 46-year-old woman at a home on Quarry Road in North Buffalo Township. Hodgson was arraigned on charges of simple assault and harassment, and placed in Armstrong County Jail on $5,000 bail.

1 p.m. Sept. 21 — Bessie Van Buren, 64, of Slippery Rock was hurt when the car she was driving collided with a sport utility vehicle that turned in front of her at Route 19 and Potter Run Road in Washington Township, Lawrence County.Van Buren and the other driver, Cory L. Shields, 24, of Pittsburgh, both suffered minor injuries. Both were wearing seat belts.Police cited Shields for careless driving.
