Melva B. Smith

Melva B. Smith, 80, of South Buffalo Township, passed away Sunday while in the company of family members at Fair Winds Manor in Winfield Township.

Melva was born in Sarver on Aug. 18, 1934, and was the daughter of the late Myra Hill and Clarence Miller.

She was a longtime member of the Slate Lick United Presbyterian Church, Freeport, where she had been involved with many of the different activities.

Melva graduated from Shadyside School of Nursing with an LPN degree while raising her children. She was a nurse at Allegheny Valley Hospital, working for many years in the obstetrics and gynecology department. Melva had also worked for Dr. Paul J. Lobby of Armstrong Eye Care Associates, Kittanning.

Melva and her husband volunteered with the Freeport Meals on Wheels. They were also campground hosts for the Shenango Lake Campground in Sharon.

Melva was a wonderful mother and homemaker. Her family loved when she would make her apple dumplings and her “best buns” for everyone.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, James D. Smith, and their five sons, Howard A. “Dusty” (Judith) Smith of Surf Side Beach, S.C., Donald E. (companion Stacy) Smith of North Buffalo Township, Randy W. (Sharon) Smith of South Buffalo Township, Thomas A. (Rona) Smith of Winfield Township, and Chuck D. (Tara) Smith of South Buffalo Township. Melva is also survived by her 13 grandchildren; her 12 great-grandchildren; her brother, Paul Miller of West Virginia, and her sister, Alice Drescher of Saxonburg.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Nettie Stark, and her brother, Walter Miller.
