Police investigate death as homicide

PINE TWP, Mercer County — State police are investigating the apparent homicide of a township man whose body was found Sunday along a road near the Mercer-Butler County line.

Investigators said 60-year-old Michael Anthony Johns Sr. was found dead about 3 p.m. in the 200 block of Irishtown Road near Route 58.

The body was outside Johns' trailer home not far from a beer distributor, authorities said.

Police said it appeared Johns suffered a serious head injury and he was possibly stabbed with a knife or other sharp object. There are no suspects in the killing.

An autopsy was conducted but a cause of death was not determined, investigators said. The Mercer County Coroner's Office declined to comment this morning.

A caller to the Mercer County Communications Center reportedly told a dispatcher that Johns was unresponsive in his yard and was not breathing.

Firefighters and an ambulance crew initially were dispatched. A short time later, police were called.

Troopers searched the road and turned up a blood trail, said police Cpl. Eric Hermick. Police also found money during their search but it was not immediately known if that could be linked to Johns' death.

Hermick said police are reviewing surveillance video from at least one business near Johns' home in hopes of finding clues in the case.

Police are asking anyone with information to call them at 724-662-6162.
