Car crashes through utility pole in city

A section of Morton Avenue remains closed this afternoon after a car crashed through a utility pole.

Butler Fire Chief Nick Ban said a 17-year-old girl was rounding a bend in Morton Avenue at its intersection with Fairview Avenue when she lost control of her silver Nissan about 12:30 p.m.

Ban said the girl took her eyes off the street to look at a dashboard light that had just turned on.

“She didn’t realize the bend was so close,” Ban said. “When she looked up, she tried to hit her breaks but inadvertently hit the gas pedal.”

The car crashed through the utility pole and into a white barrier post in the yard of the home at the corner of the intersection.

The girl suffered minor injuries but refused treatment. Her parents came and took her home.

West Penn Power was called to replace the fallen pole, which caused numerous wires to dangle close to the street.

Ban said multiple homes in the neighborhood lost power.

Police said the girl will not be cited for a traffic violation.
