William D. “Bill” Hazlet

William D. “Bill” Hazlet

William D. “Bill” Hazlet, 86, of West Sunbury passed away at 1:50 a.m. Monday at the Butler VNA Inpatient Hospice.

Bill was born on March 17, 1928, in Bruin. He was the son of the late William David Hazlet and Bertha Virginia Riggle Hazlet.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, Medical Company, 21st Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, during the Korean War, where he was awarded the Commendation Ribbon for Meritorious Achievement for his duties as a medical aidman and surgical technician. He also was awarded the United Nation Service Medal, Medical Badge, Koreans Service Medal and two Bronze Service Stars.

Bill retired from Pullman Standard where he was an inspector/welder.

He was a member of the Concord Presbyterian Church, where he served as trustee, elder and member of the cemetery committee.

He volunteered at the Moniteau Food Pantry, the Presbyterian Church Camp in Erie, the Cradle of Forestry in North Carolina, and at the Butler Veteran's Hospital as an escort. He was also a member of the Moniteau Ceremonial Squad, the American Legion Post 243 in West Sunbury, and the Cherry Valley VFW Post 7840, and a former member of the American Legion Post 636 in Foxburg.

Bill organized a bus trip to Washington D.C. in 1995 for the Korean War veterans in the area to attend the dedication ceremony of the Korean War Memorial. For the following 10 years, those same veterans met at the same time for a dinner.

Bill is survived by his wife, Betty L. Wright Hazlet, who he married on March 7, 1953; his daughter, Mrs. Roger (Nancy) Wick of West Sunbury; his two sons, William David “Dave” (Wendy) Hazlet III of West Sunbury and Carney Hazlet of West Sunbury; his six grandchildren; and his eight great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his five sisters and his two brothers.

Hazlet— The family of William D. “Bill” Hazlet, who passed away Monday, Sept. 22, 2014, will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the William F. Young Funeral Home, 132 Main St., West Sunbury.Masonic services with Parker Lodge 521 will be at 6:45 p.m. Wednesday.Friends will also be received from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Concord Presbyterian Church, 625 Hooker Road, West Sunbury, with the Rev. James R. Steiner, interim pastor of the Concord Presbyterian Church, and the Rev. Robert V. Mathias, a family friend and retired Presbyterian minister, officiating. Burial will be in the Concord Cemetery.
