Teenage brothers accused in home invasion attack

Jeremiah McGrady

KARNS CITY — State police arrested two teenage brothers accused in a home invasion early Saturday morning that left the homeowner hospitalized with several knife wounds.

Jeremiah B. McGrady, 19, of Fairview Township was arraigned on charges of attempted homicide, aggravated assault, robbery and burglary. He is in the Butler County Prison on $175,000 bail.

Zechariah J. McGrady, 17, of Fairview Township faces the same charges as his older brother. He is in an undisclosed juvenile detention facility.

Police said it would be up to the Butler County District Attorney to decide if the younger suspect would faces charges in adult or juvenile court.

The suspected victim, 34-year-old Adam Bell, underwent surgery at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh following the attack about 2 a.m. at his home on Olive Street.

Authorities said Bell suffered a cut liver and a collapsed lung. He was in stable condition this morning.

The defendants, according to investigators, broke into the home while Bell was asleep with his wife and the couple's two children. The suspects stole a cell phone and were looking for other items, police said, when Bell woke up to get a drink.

Bell found the robbers in his kitchen. One of the suspects allegedly pointed a gun at him. The gun turned out to be an Airsoft pistol, police said.

Bell struggled with the two robbers, during which Jeremiah McGrady took out a knife and stabbed him in the back twice, police said. The older bother stabbed Bell “a few more times,” court documents said.

The brothers ran out of the house. Bell eventually lost consciousness and collapsed on the floor.

Petrolia volunteer firefighters set up a landing zone at nearby Karns City High School where a medical helicopter took Bell to AGH.
