Seneca Valley shows signs of life

WEST VIEW — A stingy defense and an offense picking up yards in bunches — the third quarter of Seneca Valley's Northern Eight Conference game at North Hills reminded Raiders fans of the last few years.

But the final result was an all-too familiar one from 2014.

North Hills drove 60 yards in eight plays early in the fourth quarter, scoring on Nick Santucci's 2-yard run and taking the lead for good in a 16-15 victory at Martorelli Stadium Friday night.

“I couldn't be prouder of our effort,” said SV coach Don Holl, who watched his team fall to 0-4 overall and 0-3 in conference play. “When we are playing the way we are capable, we can play with anybody. We have to keep believing.”

North Hills remained undefeated with the win.

“This is such a tough conference,” said North Hills coach Pat Carey. “We're just happy to get another win.”

The Raiders took over at their 11-yard line after the Indians' final touchdown and marched right down the field as the fourth-quarter clock ticked away.

T.J. Holl completed six passes to three different receivers as SV reached the Indians' 7.

An incomplete pass was followed by a holding penalty against SV and Holl's pass on third-and-goal from the 22 hit the turf.

The Raiders sent kicker Chad Izenas out to attempt a 39-yard field goal, but the senior's boot fell just short with 3:04 left in the game. He had missed wide right on a 42-yard attempt in the first half.

“Chad is one of the best kickers I've ever been around and better than that, he's a great kid,” said Don Holl. “If I had a chance to let him win a game for us 10 times, I'd send him out there 10 times. There's no way I'm hanging this loss on him.”

Even after Izenas' second miss, the Raiders looked to get the ball back. But thanks in large part to a 35-yard run from Indians' quarterback Jake Bruder, there was just 31 seconds left on the clock when the Raiders took over at their own 34 after a turnover on downs.

SV reached their own 48, but T.J. Holl was hit as he let go of a desperation pass, which fell incomplete as time expired.

Bruder was the game's leading rusher with 102 yards on 12 carries. His 10-yard scoring run early in the second quarter gave the Indians a 9-0 lead.

But it was his long gain as North Hills was running out the clock that impressed Carey the most. On the play, Bruder broke a tackle near the right sideline and gained 25 more yards.

“He's an ultra-competitive kid,” Carey said. “I saw the fire in his eyes in the fourth quarter and I had a feeling things could go in our favor.”

The Raiders trailed 9-0 entering the second half, but put together two scoring drives to take the lead. The first lasted 12 plays and covered 80 yards. T.J. Holl's running and passing led the team to North Hills' 13. Jack Cook then entered the game at quarterback and, after faking a sweep to Mason Dehart, scampered 13 yards for the touchdown.

Three illegal procedure penalties on the Indians thwarted their next drive and the Raiders' offense was soon back on the field.

Holl found Mrkonja on a 36-yard pass play down to the 22-yard line. The senior wideout got the better of Kindhal Taylor in 1-on-1 coverage on the play.

Three plays later, Dehart scored on a 3-yard run. Holl's two-point conversion pass to Cody Boozel gave the Raiders their first lead of the season at 15-9.

“They (Raiders) started hitting some screens and getting good blocking downfield in that third quarter,” said Carey. “We had some trouble there.”

The game's first score was a safety when Adam Hofmeister tackled Dehart in the end zone with 1:54 left in the first quarter.

Holl completed 24-of-38 passes for 212 yards and an interception. Mrkonja caught eight passes for 81 yards.

Seneca Valley will again take to the road next Friday when the Raiders visit Butler.
