Issues in redzone haunt SV

JACKSON TWP — Instead of points, the redzone has led to a lot of frustration for the Seneca Valley football team.

In the Raiders’ three games — losses to North Allegheny, Fox Chapel and Norwin — they have reached the redzone 12 times and have come away with just 14 points.

Most of the drives have ended in disappointment, including three times by interception and twice by fumble.

“You tell the kids to play the game as it comes,” said SV coach Don Holl. “I think with us, they want to make a play so badly that they’re thinking about it too much. So far, we haven’t been able to get that big play. Maybe once it comes, it will lead to a deluge.”

The Raiders will be in search of their first win of the season when they invade Martorelli Stadium to take on undefeated North Hills Friday.

SV senior quarterback T.J. Holl returned from a right knee sprain last week, leading the Raiders to their lone score in a 14-7 home loss to Norwin.

“We wouldn’t run him out there if he wasn’t between 80 and 90 percent,” said Coach Holl. “The biggest thing was, is there any chance of aggravating the injury. From everything we were told during the rehab and examinations, there is no chance of that.

“Getting used to the brace is an issue,” he added. “More than likely, he’ll be wearing it the rest of the season. It’s a preventative-type thing.”

Holl’s return is the good news. The bad news is that senior lineman Tyler Hudanick reaggravated a leg injury against Fox Chapel Sept. 5 and is out for several weeks, as is senior receiver Brad Hensler, who left last week’s game with an ankle injury.

“We talk about next man up and that’s true to a point,” said Coach Holl. “But when you lose a starter with experience, it does affect the product on the field.

“It’s a fragile thing, they’re kids,” he added. “I do know that we are going to coach the (healthy) players up and they will play their butts off on Friday.”

North Hills is one of three undefeated teams in the Northern Eight Conference, along with Pine-Richland and Central Catholic. The Indians defeated Butler last week 35-7 and have outscored their opponents (Plum and Fox Chapel) by a combined score of 86-28.

In the win over Butler, running back Nick Santucci amassed 177 yards and a touchdown on the ground while quarterback Jake Bruder threw for 166 yards and three scores.

North Hills leads the all-time series 24-10-2, though the Raiders have won three straight, including last year’s 24-17 decision.

Indians’ coach Pat Carey could not be reached for comment.

Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
