NEW WILMINGTON — Knoch graduate Abbey Gore, a freshman defender on the Westminster College women’s soccer team, has been named Presidents’ Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week.

Gore was a key cog on a Titan defensive unit that allowed only six total shots in shutouts of Penn State-Altoona, Susquehanna and Lycoming last week.

SV grad Crivelli player of week

ERIE — Seneca Valley graduate Anthony Crivelli, a sophomore on the Penn State Behrend men’s soccer team, has been named Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Player of the Week.

Crivelli scored two goals less than three minutes apart to give his team a 2-1 win over North Central in the Sal Vaccaro Tournament last week. He also assisted on a goal in the championship game of the tournament.

SLIPPERY ROCK — Kristy Lake tallied 11 kills and Nicole Fortuna 22 assists for the Slippery Rock University women’s volleyball team in a 3-0 victory against visiting West Liberty State Tuesday night.The Rock (6-2), which won by scores of 25-21, 29-27 and 25-23, also received 17 digs from Leah Jones.

PITTSBURGH — Former Pittsburgh Pirates reliever Kent Tekulve is recovering from heart transplant surgery.Allegheny General Hospital said Tuesday the 67-year-old Tekulve was discharged Friday after the Sept. 5 operation. Tekulve works for Root Sports Pittsburgh, regularly appearing on studio shows before and after Pirates games.The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review first reported the surgery in an interview with Tekulve on Monday night.His surgeon, Dr. Stephen Bailey, says Tekulve is doing “extremely well” and should be “resuming normal daily activities very soon.” Tekulve hopes to return to his TV duties by spring training.

RALEIGH, N.C. — A prosecutor says Cleveland Browns receiver Josh Gordon will receive probation and undergo a substance-abuse assessment after pleading guilty to a drunken-driving charge in North Carolina.Acting Wake County district attorney Ned Mangum says Gordon received a 60-day suspended jail sentence and one year of unsupervised probation Tuesday.

ATLANTA — The Washington Nationals are again champions of the NL East, wrapping up their second division title in three years against the team that knocked them out of the top spot last season.The Nationals celebrated another trip to the playoffs with a 3-0 victory over the Atlanta Braves.

BALTIMORE — The Baltimore Orioles won their first AL East crown since 1997, using home runs by Steve Pearce and Jimmy Paredes to beat the Toronto Blue Jays 8-2 Tuesday night.
