California U of Pennsylvania cutting 30 positions

CALIFORNIA, Pa. — State-owned California University of Pennsylvania is cutting 30 staff positions due to a continuing enrollment decline.

Spokeswoman Christine Kindl says 16 workers are being furloughed, including 12 union employees and four managers. Fourteen other vacant positions will remain unfilled.

The university hasn’t detailed the cuts, which Kindl says will be formally announced today.

The faculty and other cuts are being made due to enrollment, which decreased 3.2 percent from last year and is now just under 8,000 students.

The school about 25 miles south of Pittsburgh saw its enrollment grow for 14 straight years through 2011, when it had a record 9,483 students.

Kindl says a nationwide baby boom has subsided, leaving colleges and universities with fewer high school graduates from which to choose.
