Truck tangled in wires closes road for hour

CRANBERRY TWP — A section of Freedom Road was closed for about an hour today after a truck got caught in the wires of a traffic signal.

A tractor trailer driving west carrying electrical equipment got caught in the wires holding up a temporary traffic signal at the intersection with Connector Road around 12:30 p.m.

The driver of the truck reported that a white coal truck driving east hit the wires and pulled them down, said Sgt. Chuck Mascellino of the township police.

There was one witness who saw another truck hit the wires first, he said.

The trailer was accompanied by two pickup truck with flashing light, flags and “Oversize Load” signs. The trucks are owned by Reinsfielder Inc. of Pittsburgh.

The drivers declined to comment on the incident.

They were not issued a ticket, but the cause of the incident is under investigation, Mascellino said.

Police closed Freedom Road between Route 19 and Executive Drive for about one hour while crews fixed the signal.

After untangling the truck, crews restrung the wires for the signal. Though the signal never stopped operating, it was returned to its normal height above the ground.

The signal is temporary because the township plans to replace it with a traffic signal on a decorative pole as part of its Route 228 and Route 19 construction, Mascellino said.
