Regarding the Aug. 21 letter “Tax-funded perversion.”

A heavily edited and spliced video from a group whose stated mission is to eliminate Planned Parenthood's services makes dubious claims about sex education and our services. This highly edited video appears to show a fake patient asking questions about sexual themes.

The health and safety of our patients and educating clients is Planned Parenthood's top priority. In fact, more than 90 percent of parents, young people and the general public support sex education. Research shows that well-designed and well-implemented sex education programs — the type of education provided by Planned Parenthood — can decrease sexual risk behaviors among teens.

The vast majority of public funding Planned Parenthood affiliates receive is reimbursements for specific medical services for low-income patients (just like other health care providers receive). Some Planned Parenthood affiliates receive grants for sex education work (just like other community organizations receive). This anti-Planned Parenthood campaign criticizes our organization for providing medically accurate information.

Every day, Planned Parenthood provides tools for parents to talk to their children about healthy relationships and sex, and we work to reach teens and adults with information about healthy relationships, as well as the importance of protecting themselves against unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. We've been doing this work for almost a century, and we remain committed to helping teens make good decisions and engage in healthy behavior.
