Street paving to begin Tuesday in Butler

Butler is spending more than $147,000 on its annual street paving this summer.

Peter J. Caruso & Sons will do the work.

Cecelia Street, St. Marys Street and Fairview Avenue each will have “micro-surfacing” work done. The process lays a thin layer of slurry seal down on the street before a layer of asphalt. The seal is intended to help extend the life of a street by about seven years and serves as a cheaper alternative to the traditional milling and repaving.

The section of Miller Avenue between Snyder Avenue and West Brady Street will have the traditional milling done.

Councilman Richard Schontz Jr. said he expects the work to begin Tuesday and be finished by the end of the week.

The city also is finishing up a couple of in-house paving projects. The city streets department is putting a 2-inch overlay on nine streets and alleys. The cost of the in-house paving this year is $22,000.
