Child assault charges filed

Man allegedly molested girls

OAKLAND TWP — A township man is accused of child molestation at the day care center his wife operates.

Roger Leo Young, 65, is being charged with two counts each of indecent assault to a minor and corruption of minors. The incidents are alleged to have taken place around November 2010 at the Patti Cake Child Care Center on Route 68.

In 2011, an underage girl made an allegation that Young had touched her inappropriately while he was holding her on his lap in a rocking chair. The girl also said she saw Young have inappropriate contact with another girl.

Later, state police used a search warrant to get video surveillance from the day care that allegedly showed Young assaulting two girls. One instance allegedly shows Young inappropriately touching a girl while she is lying down, and another shows Young lifting a girl’s shirt and touching her inappropriately.

Other footage showed Young sitting in the rocking chair with multiple girls; however, a criminal complaint said his back was turned to the camera and his hands were not seen.

Young faces a Sept. 2 preliminary hearing in Chicora before District Judge Lewis Stoughton. He is free on $50,000 unsecured bail.

Michael Zunder, Young’s attorney, did not return a call for comment.

According to the state Department of Public Welfare, which regulates child care centers, the center has no history of complaints.

The department became aware of the investigation in June.

Because of the allegations, Young will not be allowed at the facility until the criminal case is closed. The department has been doing unannounced visits to confirm Young has not been at the center.

After the case is closed, the department will evaluate the center’s license.

The day care center, owned and operated by Patti Sue Young, has been licensed since 2009. It has a licensed capacity of 12 children and has seven enrolled.

Patti Young could not be reached for comment.
