Memorial 5K held Sept. 20

Good Samaritan Hospice, a mission of Concordia Lutheran Ministries, will host its 13th annual Memorial 5K Run/Walk and 1-Mile Fun Walk Sept. 20 at the North Park swimming pool.

Registration begins at 7:30 a.m., the run/walk at 9 a.m. Registration fees are $20 until Sept. 15, $25 afterward.

Proceeds benefit GSH programs for residents facing a life-limiting illness.

Golf outing slated Aug. 17

The first Knock One Out of the Park golf outing, benefiting The Associated Artists of Butler County and the Butler BlueSox Boosters, takes place Aug. 17 at Conley's Resort.

Shotgun start is at noon.

Fee is $75 per golfer, $300 per foursome. The event includes a four-person scramble, food, beverage and awards reception.

Baseball tryouts loom in Ohio

A high profile summer baseball organization in Ohio will soon hold tryouts in Youngstown for its 2015 18-under, 16-under and 14-under teams.

Softball tourney slated next month

The Knoch Fastpitch Inaugural “Open” Girls Softball Tournament takes place Sept. 20-21 at Laura Doerr Park.

All high school teams are welcome. Entry fee is $325 per team and there is a four-game guarantee. Registration ends Aug. 29.

SRU women's soccer ranked 6th

The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team set a program record when they finished sixth nationally last season.

That led to more accolades before 2014 even started. SRU was ranked sixth in the Division II preseason poll released by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and Continental Tire.

The Rock won its first Atlantic Regional title last season before losing to American International in the quarterfinals. SRU was 14-5-2 in 2013.

5K, half-mile race slated Sept. 13

The Penn Christian Academy will hold the PCA 5K and half-mile Kids' Fun Run Sept. 13.

Proceeds from the race will support STEM programming provided by the Succop Nature Park, Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania.
