Impeding good people

I read with interest Rekha Basu’s article about James Brady (“Honor James Brady: take action on guns”) in Thursday’s Butler Eagle.
What happened to James Brady was tragic and should not have happened. But Basu’s “common-sense” proposals are anything but. History has shown time and again that registry eventually leads to confiscation.
It is already illegal for many individuals to acquire guns — but we’d all like to hear her proposals as to how to enforce those laws.
And if I am allowed to carry concealed yet am barred from carrying into restaurants, bars, schools and other gathering places, then exactly where can I carry? If I get hungry, should I leave my gun in my car? Common sense tells me that would not be a good choice. “Gun-free” zones just tell the criminals where they are least likely to encounter any resistance.
Finally, her proposal that every gun have a “smart trigger” makes no sense at all if the gun is to be of any use for self defense. Imagine that fire extinguishers had to rely on something battery-powered in order for them to be operated. How reliable would they be? I cringe when I think of reaching for my gun in the middle of the night, only to find that I can’t operate it because the battery has died.
Here’s a common-sense suggestion: Stop making laws that punish or infringe on the rights of good, honest, responsible people every time some nut-case does something stupid.
