Revesz bat gets hot for playoffs

Jeff Revesz struggled at the plate at times during the spring at Kent State University and began this summer in the Prospect League still trying to find a way out of that funk.

Finally, the Grove City High graduate and Butler BlueSox catcher is finding as much comfort at the plate as a hitter as he’s had behind it on defense.

Revesz has raised his batting average from .150 a month ago to .224 after a 3-for-4 performance against Chillicothe Monday night.

“I’m playing pretty much every day, either catching or at DH,” Revesz said. “I’m seeing pitches and it’s helping me get a lot more comfortable at the plate. It’s always better to see live pitching.”

Revesz has made it difficult for BlueSox manager Anthony Rebyanski to take him out of the lineup.

Despite being just 5-foot-10 and 185 pounds, Revesz has some power in his bat. He slugged two home runs in the same game at Richmond July 26. He’s also driven in 19 runs in just 107 at-bats.

“He’s a small guy, but he has some pop in his bat,” Rebyanski said. “He has a short, compact swing. We have a few guys like Jeff right now.”

Revesz is batting .294 with two home runs and eight RBI in his last 11 games.

Revesz has played regularly during a stretch that has seen Butler go 17-2 and clinch a spot in the playoffs, which begin today.

“It was a lot of fun,” Revesz said. “There was a time when we felt like we couldn’t lose. We won 11 in a row. It just seemed like everyone was hitting the ball and we were pitching well.”

Revesz is used to winning.

At Grove City, he was a key cog in an Eagles’ program that dominated its region and District 10.

He finished his career with a school-record 22 home runs, including 18 in his final two seasons.

He was named District 10 Baseball Player of the Year following his senior season when he batted .518 with seven home runs and 34 RBI.

At Kent State this spring as a junior, Revesz started 36 games behind the plate, but hit just .197.

Kent State won the Mid-American Conference Tournament this season and advanced to the NCAA regionals.

“It’s really been a lot of fun,” Revesz said. “Playing in the post season has been so much fun and great experience in my college career. Hopefully next year will be even better.”
