Marion Township man charged with felonies

He's suspect in hit-and-run

BUTLER TWP — Police on Monday charged a Marion Township man with a suspected hit-and-run crash last week that injured a Prospect couple riding a motorcycle.

Mitchell J. Ferguson, 26, told police he drove away because his driver's license was expired and he had no insurance on the vehicle, according to court documents.

Both victims, Gary Hartman, 61, and Karen Hartman, 60, were treated at Butler Memorial Hospital for injuries in the wreck Thursday evening.

Ferguson is charged with two felony counts of causing an accident involving injury while not properly licensed. Additionally, police cited him for seven traffic violations.

Butler Township police said the defendant was traveling south on Route 8 shortly after 7 p.m. when he made a U-turn in front of the southbound motorcycle that Gary Hartman was driving.

Hartman was unable to stop before hitting the driver's side of Ferguson's Dodge Neon.

A caller at the scene reported the suspect had sped away in the car, police said.

The caller also provided the car's license plate number.

The Hartmans suffered injuries including possible broken bones, documents said.

Officers on Friday interviewed Ferguson, who admitted fleeing the accident.

In addition to the two felonies, he is charged with failing to render aid after an accident, failing to immediately notify police of an accident, driving without a license and without insurance, reckless driving, making an improper U-turn and disregarding traffic lanes.
