Plane crash leaves man hospitalized

SPRINGFIELD TWP, Mercer County — A township man who crashed his experimental plane at the Grove City Airport on Friday remains in the hospital.

Robert Scott Winder, 83, was flown by helicopter to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh after he veered off to the side of the runway while trying to land shortly after 11 a.m.

On Friday, he was listed in critical condition. UPMC officials did not return a call for comment Tuesday. However, airport manager Heidi Ahlgrim said Winder is doing OK.

The Federal Aviation Administration was at the airport Friday to investigate the crash.

Ahlgrim said the FAA has not decided anything or released any information.

“It's going to be a while,” Ahlgrim said.

The Springfield Township Volunteer Fire Department and Superior Ambulance responded to the accident Friday morning.

The airport's operations were not affected by the crash.

Winder is a regular visitor at the airport and is the president of the Grove City chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association.
