BlueSox win streak reaches 11

Butler BlueSox manager Anthony Rebyanski did some quick math in the dugout after the game.

Rebyanski gave himself a failing grade, figuring he went 0-for-4 in coaching decisions Sunday at Kelly Automotive Park.

It didn’t matter.

The BlueSox beat Champion City 6-4 to extend a franchise-best winning streak to 11 games.

Rebyanski would rather talk about his miscues than the streak.

“Anytime I hear anybody say something about numbers, I always plug my ears,” Rebyanski said. “I’m a big superstition guy.”

Whatever superstitions the BlueSox have going on are working.

Butler swept a doubleheader with Richmond on the road Saturday before sinking Champion City (19-33, 7-18).

The BlueSox (34-18, 19-5) lead the East Division second-half standings by three games and are a half-game behind Chillicothe for the best overall record.

“They are fundamentally sound defensively and don’t make many errors,” Champion City assistant coach Rick White said. “The pitching is good and they hit the ball. It’s a really good team and I think they are going to win the second half.”

Butler starting pitcher Brett Sullivan, who earned the win against the Kings by striking out four in 6 2/3 innings of work, is enjoying the ride.

“It’s wild,” Sullivan said. “Even if we don’t play well, we keep finding ways to way.”

Clutch hitting was the key against Champion City. In the third inning, the BlueSox took advantage of an error and pounded out five hits to build a 6-0 lead.

Taylor Schmidt hit a one-out single off Kings starter Chris Hunt to start off the inning.

Stephen Sada reached on an error before Mick Fennell came up and delivered an RBI single to right field.

“I knew with a runner in scoring position I just had to get a ball in the air and get a base hit,” said Fennell, a Butler High School graduate. “I’m happy the hit got through and we got the string going there.”

Sada scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Hanahan. Butler High School graduate Cody Herald followed with a single and Stuart Levy drew a walk.

Ryan Uhl then singled to score Fennell and Herald to put the BlueSox ahead 5-0. Collin Massanelli lofted a soft fly ball that landed behind third and scored Levy and Uhl.

That helped take the pressure off Sullivan, who allowed 10 hits.

“Our defense plays well behind us,” Sullivan said. “A lot of times our offense gets us off to an early lead and that makes it easier to pitch.”

The Kings scored twice in the fifth, cutting the lead on RBI singles from Jake Bennett and Landon Lucansky.

Sullivan rebounded in the sixth, striking out the side and Rebyanski sent him out for the seventh.

After Lucansky doubled in Bennett, Butler brought in Tanner Schmacher. Rebyanski said he may have left Sullivan out for one inning too long.

“We’re not always going to be right in the moves we make,” Rebyanski said.

Butler closer Austin Ross allowed a run on a wild pitch in the ninth, but didn’t let Champion City rally to earn his eighth save.

It capped an imperfect effort with another BlueSox win.

“It feels like it’s hard for us to lose right now,” Fennell said.
