Heavy rain and thunderstorms Saturday led to the temporary suspension of the annual American Cancer Society Relay For Life of the Greater Cranberry Area at North Boundary Park, but they didn’t stop walkers from finishing the signature event Sunday.

Erica Dipyatic, a volunteer on the planning committee for the Cranberry Relay For Life, said Monday the event was “definitely successful,” and capped off a year’s worth of fundraising that brought in a total of $116,500 in donations.

The relay began at 11 a.m. Saturday, but was suspended about 9:30 p.m. due to the dangerous weather, Dipyatic said.

“We did have to suspend the evening due to weather,” she said. “The decision was made with everyone’s safety in mind. It was the first time in the 11 years of being held here that Mother Nature has intervened.”

Dipyatic said walkers were back on the track at 7:30 a.m. Sunday and the walk was finished on schedule at 9 a.m. with the closing ceremonies.

Relay For Life is the final event of year-round fundraising for the American Cancer Society. It is a 24-hour event where walkers take shifts circling a track to raise funds.
