DeSantis

Born in Butler on Jan. 3, 1921, he was the son of the late Anthony and Florence Campbell DeSantis.

Nathan was a member of the first graduating class of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y. He bravely served in the Merchant Marine during World War II.

He was employed for more than 37 years with the Gulf Oil Corp., where he served as director of Gulf's foreign fleet. He also worked as a consultant for Coastal Oil of Houston, Texas, and as a consultant for the U.S. Department of Energy in Washington, D.C.

He was a member of Saint Fidelis Roman Catholic Church in Meridian, the Butler Country Club, the Esquire Club of Butler, the Dirty Dozen Traveling Golf Club and the Merchant Marine Veterans Club of New Castle. Nathan was also a volunteer with Meals on Wheels.

Nathan was instrumental in the construction of the Merchant Marine memorial in Butler County's Diamond Park.

He is survived by one son, William A. DeSantis and his wife, Susan, of Merritt Island, Fla.; two daughters, Patricia Hurd and her husband, Bill, of Penn Township and Jane G. Bean and her husband, John Richard, of South Park.

He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Christine Rowing and her husband, Allen, of Mount Lebanon, Mark Hurd and his wife, Elisa, of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, John Bean and his wife, Erin, of Jefferson Hills, Joelle Dixon and her husband, Dennis, of Bethel Park, Jason DeSantis and his wife, Brianne, of Ormond Beach, Fla., Jessica Owen and her husband, Lucas, of Wallkill, N.Y., Meghan Dickerson and her husband, Joshua, of Las Vegas, Nev., and Erik Hurd and his wife, Jaime, of Adams Township; and 17 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Nathan was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian L. “Jiggs” DeSantis, who passed away June 30, 2011; and his brother, Richard DeSantis, who passed away Dec. 9, 1998.

DESANTIS — Friends of Nathan E. DeSantis, who died Thursday, July 24, 2014, will be received in the Martin Funeral Home, 429 Center Ave., Butler, from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday and from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday.A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Saint Fidelis Roman Catholic Church, Meridian, with the Rev. James Murphy, pastor, officiating. Burial will take place in Saint Michael's Cemetery.The bereavement committee of Saint Fidelis Parish will meet at the funeral home at 3 p.m. Monday for a vigil service.The family requests memorial donations to Meals on Wheels, 218 E.
