83-year-old man hurt in plane crash

SPRINGFIELD TWP, Mercer County — The pilot of the small experimental plane that crashed Friday morning at the Grove City Airport is Robert Scott Winder, 83, of Springfield Township.

He was flown by helicopter to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. As of Friday afternoon, he was in critical condition.

Heidi Ahlgrim, airport manager, said Winder was trying to land the self-designed plane about 11 a.m. but missed the runway. She said she was not sure of what exactly caused the crash.

She said that Winder is a regular pilot at the airport. He is the president of the Grove City chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association.

The Springfield Township Volunteer Fire Department and Superior Ambulance responded to the crash.

Ahlgrim said the crash was cleaned up quickly and the airport’s operations were back to normal by noon.

The Federal Aviation Administration was at the airport Friday afternoon to investigate the crash.
