Crash downs utility wires on Center Avenue

Part of Center Avenue was shut down this afternoon when a box truck hit a utility pole.

Richard McKinney, 52, of Pittsburgh said he was attempting to park his truck in a metered space in the 300-block of the street at 12:15 p.m. when the front passenger side of his truck hit the pole. The impact caused the pole to lean, lowering its wires across the street.

Seconds later a tractor-trailer driven by William Knepp, 60, of Tiona, Pa., hit the lowered wires, pulling the sheared utility pole down on the box truck.

The accident resulted in numerous wires falling down on the street.

The street has been closed between the Fairview Avenue and South Monroe Street intersections for more than an hour while crews attempted to clean up the wires.

Knepp was stuck inside his rig for nearly an hour as the possible live wires were draped across his vehicle.

Fire Chief Nick Ban said there were no injuries.
