Man accused of theft spree

He allegedly stole necklace, sweepers

A Butler man is suspected in a nearly weeklong theft binge in Butler County.

Cory J. Hennessy, 25, allegedly stole a $3,600 necklace from a store in Butler in his most recent crime Sunday morning, city police said.

Along the way, according to police reports, he made off with two sweepers from a store in Butler Township and more than $100 from a home in Butler.

Police said they have multiple arrest warrants for Hennessy.

The suspect is last known to have struck at the Kmart store in Butler’s Pullman Square shopping plaza, according to a police report.

A store security officer about 10 a.m. Sunday spotted the alleged thief make off with a 10-carat gold men’s necklace. Police searched the area but couldn’t find him.

Investigators later identified Hennessy after reviewing store surveillance tape.

Butler police also believe the defendant earlier in the weekend stole $115 from a home in the 100 block of Fifth Avenue.

The alleged victim, 27-year-old Amanda Boulanger, told police she allowed Hennessy to stay at her home on Friday night. But when she awoke Saturday morning, a report said, the suspect was gone — so was $115 from her purse.

He faces charges of retail theft and theft in connection with the city cases.

Butler Township police, meanwhile, last week charged Hennessy with stealing a pair of sweepers from the Walmart at Butler Commons.

Police allege the defendant shortly after 5 p.m. Tuesday drove away with the sweepers, valued at $432.

He is charged with retail theft and receiving stolen property in the township case.

Butler County Court records show Hennessy is already on probation stemming from the 2012 theft at a home in Butler.

City police said the defendant in that case stole a 43-inch flat-screen television, laptop computer, jewelry and other items from the house on West Fulton Street.

He eventually pleaded guilty to theft and was sentenced in March, in part, to a year on probation.
