The Mars School Board on Tuesday:

Approved the posting of a new policy on school-affiliated organizations that lists the requirements of such groups. The policy affects all booster, parent and volunteer groups, the PTOs, the foundation, or any group that supports a district activity or event. Posting a policy means it is under school board review.

Heard from four officials from the state School Boards Association who asked the board to consider rejoining the organization because of a wholesale change in leadership there. The board voted in 2009 not to renew its membership. Board President Dayle Ferguson said the board would take the information under advisement.

Approved action to advertise for bids for upgrades at the two baseball fields near the primary center. Two representatives from the Mars Baseball Association provided preliminary drawings of the upgrades needed. The district’s estimated costs for drainage, fencing, raising the infield, and other work is about $105,000.

Approved the resignation of longtime music teacher Chris Protho, who has moved to the Allegheny Valley School District to be the principal at Springdale High School. During his tenure at Mars, Protho served as president of the teacher’s union, assisted with the district’s data initiative, and served as a statistician for sports teams.
