Police: Woman wrecks van after drugs are denied

A Butler woman claimed she deliberately crashed her van into a city apartment building early Friday morning after a drug deal went bad, police said.

Butler police found 63-year-old Priscilla E. Folks still in the van about 3:45 a.m. when they got to the Stirling apartments in the 400 block of North Main Street.

Police Lt. Michael Dalcamo asked her what happened.

“She told me that she gave (a man) $100 for crack cocaine, and he failed to give her the crack or her money back,” Dalcamo said in court documents. “So she crashed her van into the apartment building where he lives.”

Folks was not hurt. Neither were any of the tenants.

It appeared the two-story brick building was not damaged, except for a chip in one of the bricks.

Folks’ van sustained only minor damage, according to Butler firefighters, who assisted at the scene.

Police arrested Folks, and District Judge Lewis Stoughton later arraigned her on misdemeanor charges of reckless endangerment, disorderly conduct and reckless driving. She is in the Butler County Prison on $30,000 bail.

Tenant Jim Scherrah said that moments before the crash Folks knocked on his door and asked for a couple cigarettes. He obliged and she left.

He saw her get into her van. Then he heard the vehicle’s horn blow

“The next thing I knew,” Scherrah recounted, “she drove the van into the building.”

Scherrah’s neighbor, the man purportedly targeted by Folks, admitted he knows Folks but denied being party to her drug deal.

“I don’t do drugs,” he told the Butler Eagle.

He said he slept through the crash and only learned about what happened after waking up later in the morning.

Several other neighbors also acknowledged they were unaware that the wreck happened.

Police said at least a dozen apartments are occupied and most of the tenants were home.

There are 24 units in the apartment building owned by Applewood Springs L.P. of Butler. The owner did not return a telephone call Friday.
