Don't blame Metcalfe

I was very surprised by Bob Arlia’s letter (“Principles have a price”, June 22). He claims the recent Seneca Valley School tax increase is the fault of state Rep. Daryl Metcalfe and asserts that Metcalfe’s principles are somehow responsible for the tax increase.

That allegation is completely ludicrous.

Metcalfe has never voted for a tax increase and has made a strong commitment to his constituents that he never will. He supports the elimination of property taxes in Pennsylvania. He’s fighting to eliminate teacher strikes, which drive up the cost of public education.

Most importantly, Metcalfe is promoting legislation to require voter approval for all school tax increases.

To blame Metcalfe for the Seneca Valley school tax increase is to completely ignore everything he is working to accomplish and everything he stands for.

Why are we always looking at the revenue shortfall as a “not enough money” problem? In today’s economy we have people with stagnant incomes and loss of jobs and homes, and government on every level continues to increase spending. School boards, townships, states and federal government never look at cutting spending and taxes. Maybe the next school budget can try something different, like reducing the millage. In the words of a tax and spend government official, “That would take real courage to do that.”
