Financing decision on hotel expected Tuesday

Financing for the Centre City project’s proposed hotel may be finalized within days.

But it also may take several more months.

Art Cordwell, the executive director of the city redevelopment authority, said at the authority’s meeting Thursday that the bank will make its financing decision Tuesday.

J.S. Capitol Construction, the developer of the Centre City project, is seeking a $3 million loan to finance the hotel.

The redevelopment authority, which would be a 40 percent owner of the hotel, will chip in about $2 million of already approved state funds.

Jeff Schmitz, the owner of J.S. Capitol, said NexTier Bank is considering the financing.

“I spoke with them for about four hours last week,” Schmitz said this morning. “They like the deal. I’m confident we’ll have a deal.”

Schmitz added the bank is just doing its due diligence.

If financing is approved, Schmitz said today that construction of the hotel would begin in late summer of fall, and it would take about a year to complete.

However, if the deal falls through, the hotel and the accompanying 225-lot parking garage would be delayed several months, likely into next year.

Schmitz has met with other banks to discuss financing proposals, but those have not advanced too far.
