State system tuition to rise

HARRISBURG — Tuition for college students attending schools in the State System of Higher Education, including Slippery Rock University, will go up nearly $200 for the coming school year.

The state system board of governors on Tuesday approved the increase, according to a state system news release.

The base tuition rate for full-time, resident undergraduates at any of the 14 state system universities this fall will be $3,410 a semester, $6,820 for the full academic year.

The current annual tuition is $6,622, which was up $194 from 2012-2013.

Nearly 90 percent of state system students are Pennsylvania residents and about 85 percent attend full-time.

The tuition increase essentially matches next year’s projected rate of inflation of about 3 percent. It marks the eighth time in the past 10 years the state system has kept the tuition increase close to the inflation rate, according to the release.

It has done that despite the fact that funding from the state has been steady for four consecutive years and now is slightly above the amount that was received in 1997-1998, according to the release.

“Our university leadership, especially our presidents, should be commended for the tremendous work they have done to contain their institutions’ costs and to become even more efficient in their operations during these challenging times,” said board Chairman Guido Pichini in the release.

With the tuition and other anticipated fee increases, the average total cost for a full-time, resident student at a state system university next year — including tuition, fees, room and board — will be about $18,500.

At SRU, extra fees include a health center fee, a student activities fee and a technology fee.

SRU, which has a budget is $114.5 million, has about 8,600 students.

Tuition for full-time, out-of-state students will be higher. That will range from $7,160 to $17,050 at state system schools.
