Cranberry police warn of jury duty scam

CRANBERRY TWP — Township police are warning residents to be wary of fraudulent calls or texts asking people for money for failure to report for jury duty.

In a statement on the township’s website, officials said callers are identifying themselves as being from a sheriff’s office or a jury commission.

The fraudulent callers claim that the person failed to report for jury duty and that the person must pay a fine or face a possible jail sentence as recompense.

The scam hasn’t affected anyone in the township yet but has been happening around the country.

Township officials pointed out that Butler County notifies potential jurors through the mail and never asks them to reveal sensitive information over the phone.

They warned that anyone contacted in this manner should hang up and call the police.
