EAU CLAIRE — A deadly all-terrain vehicle accident was just a matter of time, neighbors on Route 38 have feared for a year, maybe longer.

At 1:10 p.m. Tuesday, a young man suffered mortal injuries when an ATV driven by a 14-year-old boy collided with a tractor-trailer at South Washington Street, also known as Route 38, and Garner Road, authorities said.

Shane Scott, 20, was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:42 p.m., according to the Butler County Coroner’s office.

An autopsy was performed, but no cause of death has been announced, according to the coroner’s office.

A police report did not indicate if the boy, who along with Scott was thrown from the ATV, needed hospital treatment. Neither rider was wearing a helmet, witnesses said.

“I’m not surprised at all what happened,” said a woman who lives on Route 38 close to the crash. She did not want to give her name.

She and other neighbors, like Mike Eiler, have called state police many times during the past year, complaining of the number of four-wheelers going up and down their street.

“It’s all the time,” Eiler said. “Everyday we’re gasping that somebody doesn’t get hit.”

According to the police report, the 14-year-old was driving the ATV west on Garner Road when he lost control and went onto South Washington, colliding with a northbound tractor-trailer.

Jesse Sayers, no age given, of New Bethlehem, Clarion County, who was driving the rig, was not hurt.

Eau Claire volunteer firefighters rushed to the scene and emergency medical technicians performed CPR on Scott before an ambulance took him to the hospital.

It was not known if the teen faces any charges. Trooper Ron Kesten, spokesman at the Butler barracks, did not return a telephone call this morning.

Neighbors said Scott lived just 300 yards near the wreck. The boy also lives in the borough, about a quarter mile away.
