Cause of death ruled

Autopsy shows woman died of drowning

SCOTT TWP, Lawrence County — An autopsy determined that a 26-year-old woman whose body was pulled Wednesday afternoon from a pond died of drowning, authorities said.

Nancy E. List’s death was ruled accidental and the autopsy found no other injuries on her, said Lawrence County Deputy Coroner Sam Teolis.

Trooper Randy Guy, the investigating officer, said the case is all but closed; however, toxicology reports still are pending.

List of Slippery Rock Township, Lawrence County, went missing about 8 p.m. Tuesday after a small aluminum boat she was in capsized, police said. She was fishing with her husband, Michael W. List, 29, at the time.

The lake covers about five acres and is in a wooded area on private property off Countyline Road in Scott Township, not far from the Butler County line.

“The husband told us his wife made some type of sudden movement which caused the boat to flip over,” Guy said.

The couple, married for two years, had been out on the pond for about 90 minutes before the accident. Investigators have not ruled out that alcohol may have been a factor.

Police described the aluminum row boat as 12 feet long and about 4½ feet wide.

Michael List recounted that he and his wife managed to flip the boat right side up, but it was filled with water. They held onto the boat at opposite ends while tying to swim to shore with it, Guy said.

“That may have been the fatal decision,” he said. “Instead of swimming directly to shore, they tried to recover the boat,” the trooper said.

Authorities noted that the water temperature was in the 40s or low-50s, and the cold likely contributed to List’s drowning.

At some point, she began to struggle while holding onto the boat. William List told investigators his wife could swim.

“He stated he saw her go under,” Guy said. “He dove several times and tried to find her but the water was very murky. He couldn’t see anything.”

The bottom of the pond is littered with tree stumps, logs and other debris, authorities said.

William List made it out of the water and ran several hundred yards to the nearest home to get help. No one was there so he had to run several hundred yards more to the next available home.

There, 911 was called just after 8:20 p.m.

Troopers and a state police helicopter assisted local volunteer firefighters and divers in looking for List until 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, when the search was called off due to poor visibility.

The search resumed about 7:30 a.m. Wednesday with fire departments again deployed along with water rescue and dive teams from Lawrence and Butler counties.

Rescuers recovered the body at 2:25 p.m. in water 7 to 8 feet deep and about 40 to 50 yards from shore, where List was seen going under, Guy said.

Teolis pronounced her dead at 3:15 p.m.
