Quinn Michael Sassone

Quinn Michael Sassone received his Eagle Scout Award on June 26 and celebrated with an Eagle Scout Court of Honor on Nov. 3.

The 18-year-old is a senior at Butler High School. His project took place at Westminster Church on North Main Street. It involved designing and planting a butterfly garden, complete with a bench that he handcrafted. It now serves the community as a quiet place to sit, reflect and rest on walks to Main Street shops.

He has been involved with scouting through Pack 19 and then Troop 19 since second grade. He credits the mentoring of his troop leaders, especially the late Rich Stock, for bringing him the encouragement to achieve Eagle Scout.

Quinn is also active in his church youth group and BTTV productions at school.

He is the son of Braden Sassone of Renfrew and Brian and Sherry Sholes of Butler.

Morgan Waldroup from Petroleum Valley Girl Scout Troop 21945 earned her Silver Award, the highest award earned by Girl Scouts at the Cadette level.Morgan is 14, attends Karns City High School, and is the daughter of Brandy and Todd Waldroup of Fenelton. She chose to earn her award by helping the Chicora Elementary PTO.Seeing the need to expand the children’s reading programs for kindergarten through second grade, Morgan organized a Dr. Seuss reading event at the elementary school as an extracurricular activity for the students. She had 33 students attend.Morgan used her leadership skills to recruit teachers. Teachers Danette Hebenthal, Christine Spencer, Vonda Graham and April McMillen as well as adult helpers in PTO and Girl Scouts volunteered to coordinate this evening of games, snacks, reading and watching a movie with the Dr. Seuss theme “Green Eggs and Ham.” The students voted overwhelmingly that they enjoyed the snack of green eggs and ham, many trying the food for the very first time.In addition to the Dr. Seuss evening, Morgan also prepared a binder of her activities for the Chicora PTO to use as a guide to replicate this program in future years.
