Woman found guilty in death of her husband

TIONESTA, Forest County — A Butler County woman has been acquitted of murder but found guilty on a lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter in the 2012 death of her husband at the couple’s camp near Tionesta.

A jury of nine women and three men took nearly five hours Friday before returning their verdict against 59-year-old Ruth Maxine Angert of Clearfield Township

Jurors in their decision determined Angert did not intentionally shoot 68-year-old Larry Angert with his own .38-caliber revolver during an argument Nov. 17.

Angert testified in her own defense at the two-day trial, claiming her husband pushed her to the floor and grabbed her around the neck. Moments later, she grabbed Larry’s gun but he immediately confronted her again.

She recounted that as the two struggled over the revolver it accidentally fired. The single round entered Larry’s left cheek, traveled through his brain and went out the top of his head.

The jury’s verdict outraged Larry Angert’s family.

“She’s not going to pay enough or suffer enough for what she did,” said Victor Bauldoff, Larry’s stepbrother, speaking on behalf of the family.

The involuntary manslaughter charge, a first-degree misdemeanor, carries a maximum penalty of 3½ to seven years in prison and has a standard sentencing guideline range calling for a minimum sentence of 9 to 16 months.

But since the jury determined that Angert used a deadly weapon in the crime, she is subject to a longer sentence, meaning a likely increase in jail time over the standard guideline range.

She has been in the Warren County Jail without bail since her arrest, meaning she already is credited with serving 15 months.

Angert’s family members did not want to comment following the verdict.

Forest County District Attorney Elizabeth Ziegler and Angert’s lead attorney, public defender Todd Woodin, also offered no remarks after the jury’s decision was announced at 9:25 p.m.
