Regarding the letter by Bill Criley (“Primary wasn’t final,” Jan. 26).

The writer states “primaries are not elections.”

I would suggest he read the Pennsylvania statute “Title 25-Elections, Sub chapter A — Preliminary provisions, Section 701-Definitions. Election is defied as: a general, municipal, special or primary election.

In November 2012, the Butler County Commissioners voted on the question “should Butler County maintain the offices of jury commissioners?” Commissioners Jim Eckstein and Bill McCarrier voted yes; Dale Pinkerton no.

Relying on that vote, candidates for the office submitted nomination petitions. The names of the candidates for jury commissioners were placed on the May 21, 2013, ballot, and 15,491 voters (not 1,400 as stated by the writer) voters cast their votes for candidates for jury commisioners.

On May 23, two days after the election, McCarrier changed his vote and voted with Pinkerton to eliminate jury commissioners. The actions of McCarrier and Pinkerton nullified 15,491 votes cast for candidates for jury commissioners, rendering those votes worthless and of no value.

There is something terribly wrong in our system of government when two men can overturn, override, cancel, vacate, abolish and nullify the votes of 15,491 voters.
