Primary wasn't final

Statements such as Beverly Schenck made to Butler County Commissioner Bill McCarrier this past Wednesday serve no purpose other than to show her ignorance of the election process and to confuse uninformed voters.

To accuse the county commissioners of nullifying an election by eliminating the jury commissioner posts after the May primary is laughably absurd. Except for rare occurrences such as special elections, no one — I repeat, no one — is elected to any post or office during a primary.

Ms. Schenck should know as well as anybody that primaries are not “elections.” They are simply the nominating process used by the two major political parties to choose who to place on the ballot. Even if candidates are unopposed in the primary, they can be beaten in the actual elections in November by independent and minor party candidates (who don’t need to submit their nominating petitions until well after the primary).

So tell me, Ms. Schenck, how were 1,400 votes nullified?

Disclosure: Former jury commissioner Clinton Bonetti is my cousin’s son.
