All should sacrifice

Concerning letters by Robert Baughman (“Depriving veterans,” Jan. 3) and Gregory Walter (“Vet pay promised,” Jan. 3) concerning a 1 percent reduction in the annual COLA paid to retired military personnel under the age of 65:
I am willing to accept the cut (my husband is retired from the U.S. Army) — if the same principle is applied to the retirement pay of all federal servants to include representatives, senators and presidents. I don’t believe that is written into the proposed change; until it is, the savings realized would be minimal and/or inconsequential and would really only help the Defense Department balance its part of the budget.
Desperate times demand desperate measures. To bring the bloated U.S. budget under control, we have to begin somewhere, and everyone should expect to give up something.
This proposal, even with extending its reach to all retired federal retirees, won’t balance the budget, but it would be a good small start.
