PITTSBURGH — A man is alive after a police officer happened by a fiery crash on Route 8 in Allegheny County.
The early morning crash happened after the SUV driven by Matthew Connolly crashed through a fence surrounding the Glenshaw Glass Plant.
The SUV also snapped a power pole and slammed into a wooden shelter that holds discarded glass.
A Shaler Township police officer on routine patrol drove by and investigated after noticing grass in the road.
Gasoline leaking from the vehicle had caught fire, so the officer called paramedics and firefighters who extinguished the flames and pulled the 25-year-old driver to safety.
Connolly is said to be in serious condition at Allegheny General Hospital, but is expected to survive.
