CHICORA — Logan Reep’s grandmother is his biggest fan.

Without her help, Reep would never have accomplished one of hunting’s more prized achievements.

Reep, 16, of Chicora completed hunting’s “grand slam” in less than a month’s time, bagging a 6-point buck, turkey, two deer and a black bear from Oct. 28 through Nov. 24.

“He wasn’t even going to get his bear license,” Reep’s grandmother, Donna Pyle, said. “He didn’t feel like he was going to get one and he didn’t want anyone in the family spending money on the license if he didn’t.

“I went out and bought the license for him. I felt like he was gonna get lucky.”

And he did.

Reep got his buck during bow season Oct. 28. He got the turkey Nov. 11. He bagged both in Chicora.

He got the doe on Oct. 24 and 26, both in Fairview.

“Once I got the deer and turkey, I decided to go for it,” Reep said of the grand slam. “That opportunity doesn’t come along very often.”

He ventured into the woods with best friend Nathaniel Manculich on the latter’s family farm in Chicora on Nov. 24.

“We were out there all day ... saw a few deer and that was about it,” Reep said. “After all those hours, we weren’t going to go back out. We were going to head to the store.

“For some reason, we never went to the store. We went back out and I saw three bears coming over a hill.”

Reep shot one of them — a 140-pound black bear — while Manculich and his father got the others.

“It was cool being able to do this with my best friend,” Reep said. “I never thought I’d get a bear. This is the first year I ever tried for one.”

Reep began hunting when he was 12.

“My father (Timothy Reep) always hunted and I used to go out in the woods with him,” Reep said. “I always wanted to hunt. I wanted to be like him.”

Reep considers hunting his sport. He hopes to travel to Illinois some year and hunt for trophy white-tails.

Other than that, he’s happy to continue spending time in the woods locally.

“I enjoy being out in the woods, seeing nature, all of the animals, the leaves changing colors,” Reep said. “I like the whole experience.”

His grandmother remains in his corner.

“I was told it’s been four years since someone Logan’s age goprt the grand slam,” Pyle said. “I’m proud opf him.

“When it comes to hunting, I’m his biggest supporter.”
