SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University is having an easier time dealing with financial issues compared to the other 13 State System of Higher Education schools.

Only one tenured professor at SRU will be eliminated for the 2014-2015 academic year, contrasting with other state schools that are proposing plans to cut dozens of faculty.

These cuts are being made to balance tight budgets at all the universities.

The SRU professor in the math department was offered to be transferred to another department but voluntarily decided to end her employment at the end of the 2013-2014 academic year.

Rita Abent, an SRU spokeswoman, said that the position will not be refilled.

“That was the only one we had,” Abent said.

Additionally, six tenure track positions at SRU will be altered. Three professors have accepted transfers to other departments, and three other transfers are pending.

She said at this point no academic programs will change or be cut.

Other state system universities have proposed more drastic plans than SRU to deal with their deficits:

n Edinboro University announced that would cut 40 faculty positions

n Mansfield University announced that it is considering cutting up to 29 faculty and 25 administrative positions

n Clarion University announced that it would eliminate 42 positions and get rid of bachelor’s programs in music education and French education

n East Stroudsburg University announced that it is phasing out bachelor’s degrees in music and French as well as cutting five faculty members.

Abent said that the SRU administration and the faculty union at SRU have been meeting regularly to discuss how to best handle financial decisions. She said this team approach has made the minimal cuts possible.
