CRANBERRY TWP — A Missouri man died Friday morning in a two-vehicle accident on Interstate 79.

State police identified the man as Joseph W. South Jr., 42, of Cuba, Mo.

South and a female passenger, identified by police as Mandy Garrison, 22, were parked in a car on the eastern shoulder of the northbound lane when, for an unknown reason, South made a sharp turn into traffic.

The car was t-boned immediately by a pickup truck that was hauling a camping trailer.

James L. Bushmire, 54, of Sturgeon, Pa., was driving the pickup. Bushmire and James J. Eicher, 40, of Pittsburgh were on their way to Erie for a fishing trip. They were not injured.

“It was a perfect t-bone,” said Dennis Trzeciak, Butler County deputy coroner. “The truck intruded at least halfway into the vehicle. The driver literally turned right in front of the truck. He obviously didn’t see him.”

Trzeciak said that South died of injuries to his head, body and neck and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said Garrison had major injuries and was taken to UPMC in Cranberry.

Neither South nor Garrison were wearing seat belts.

The crash happened just after 10 a.m. Friday at mile marker 81, which is near North Boundary Road in Cranberry.

Cuba, Mo. is an hour and a half southwest of St. Louis.
