CRANBERRY TWP — A Missouri man died this morning after a three-vehicle accident on Interstate 79.

A 42-year-old man and his passenger were parked on the eastern shoulder of the northbound lane of the interstate when, for an unknown reason, the driver made a sharp left turn into traffic, according to Dennis Trzeciak, Butler County deputy coroner.

The car was t-boned immediately upon re-entry onto I-79 by a pickup truck hauling a camping vehicle. The two men in the pickup, who were on their way to Erie for a fishing trip, were not injured.

“It was a perfect t-bone,” Trzeciak said. “The truck intruded at least halfway into the vehicle. The driver literally turned right in front of the truck. He obviously didn’t see him.”

Trzeciak said that the man died of injuries to his head, body and neck and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A female passenger in the car was taken to a hospital in Pittsburgh, but her condition and location aren’t immediately known.

Trzeciak said those people in the car were from Cuba, Mo., which is an hour and a half southwest of St. Louis. The men in the truck were from Oakdale, Allegheny County, Trzeciak said.

Neither the drivers nor the passengers in the vehicles were identified.

Another vehicle in the left lane was trying to pass the truck, according to Trzeciak, and was involved in the accident. No one from that vehicle was injured, he said.

The crash happened just after 10 a.m. at mile marker 81, which is near North Boundary Road in Cranberry Township.
