Driver injured in Route 8 crash

PENN TWP — A Butler man was injured this morning when his car hit a trailer and a pickup on Route 8.

Aaron Lee Speed, 29, was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital. As of 9 a.m. he still was being treated for unspecified injuries, but was expected to be released sometime today.

Middlesex Officer Randy Davison, who responded to the scene first, said Speed was conscious following the accident.

“He was alert and talking,” Davison said.

He said Speed was southbound when his Dodge Stratus hit the northbound trailer, which was being pulled by a standard-sized truck in the middle turning lane making a left onto Hicks Road, at 6:41 a.m.

Davison said the car then went around the left side of the trailer and hit the driver’s side of a pickup behind the trailer in the turning lane.

“He kind of bounced off the truck,” Davison said.

He said a witness reported the car was speeding.

“The car never stopped,” Davison said. “He slammed right into the (trailer).”

Neither the driver of the truck pulling the trailer, Ralph Jones, 61, who had a Texas driver’s license, or the pickup, driven by Jay Reinke, 34, of Wyoming, were injured.

Both vehicles were headed to the XTO plant.

Davison said Speed was late for work.

Penn Township Officer Jack Ripper said Speed faces a traffic citation.

While the wreckage was cleared, both southbound lanes of Route 8 were closed. Traffic was diverted into the middle turning lane.
