We can do better

I have been an unapologetic and strong supporter of Barack Obama since his keynote address at the Democratic National Convention in 2004. I am disappointed that President Obama continues to embrace hydraulic fracturing (fracking) — because without federal oversight, the gas industry will recklessly take from our communities the quality of life that is our right, along with our water, our clean air and our health.

Mr. President, please visit Lancaster Township in Butler County and neighboring Connoquenessing Township. We are being sacrificed to the twin deities of fossil fuels and fast cash.

I am disappointed at the level of warrantless domestic surveillance that has recently been leaked by Edward Snowden. To refute the correctness of this expensive folly, I submit the 4th Amendment to The United States Constitution: “The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.”

I am disappointed that Obama’s recent global warming policy did not include a provision that by returning to more traditional methods of agriculture we could create a huge carbon sink. Obama’s policies seem to be falling short on the science that we were promised.

I remain a Democrat and I remain a supporter of the president. But I think Obama has relaxed since he secured his second term. Mr. President, the time has come to wake up and reengage. As you stated so long ago, we can do better.
