Steal of home not enough for West Sunbury

Center Twp. earns 11-1 win

Trent Young stole home to extend the game for West Sunbury.

Ryan Vero ended it for Center Township.

Vero laced a line drive into the gap of left-center field to score Adam Voelker and Center Township walked off in the sixth inning with an 11-1 win over West Sunbury in a Butler County American Legion baseball tilt on Tuesday at Pullman Park.

Center Township (11-6) took a 2-0 lead after two innings and seized complete control after an eight-run third, which featured five hits, three walks and four West Sunbury (2-11) errors.

In need of a run to keep the game going in the fifth, Young swiped home with Evan Barber pitching from the windup, but that was all the offense West Sunbury could muster.

Joseph DiMartino pitched three shutout innings for the win. He allowed one hit and struck out four. Barber came in to start the fourth and fanned two before Center Township wrapped up the win.

“They were just throwing strikes,” said Center Township manager Doug Culbertson. “That’s all I ask of them is to throw at the strike zone and they did a good job.”

A sloppy third inning doomed West Sunbury (2-11), but manager Phil Shaffer believes his team can be a threat in the postseason if it performs to its capabilities.

“I think our team is probably as good as any team here. Every time we play, we’re usually competitive,” Shaffer explained. “Tonight wasn’t one of those situations, but we’ve lost a bunch of games by one run.

“We try to be as competitive as we can,” he added. “It’s been a fun year so far.”

Dom DeAngelo, Kolby Kriess, Vero and DiMartino paced a balanced attack for Center Township (11-6) with two hits apiece. All 11 CT players to enter the game reached base at least once.

Culbertson hopes his team will peak at the right time with the playoffs looming next week.

“The team has definitely come along pretty well this year. We had one bad game and since then the boys have been playing solid baseball,” said Culbertson. “We have to put it together. I think they’re doing good. They’re tuned up and ready to go.”
