City woman in critical condition after shooting

Butler police are investigating a weekend shooting that left a 49-year-old woman hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

The woman, who police did not identify, suffered a shotgun wound to the stomach and lower chest early Sunday morning at her home in the 300 block of Miller Avenue.

She underwent surgeries Sunday and Monday at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, and was listed in critical but stable condition this morning, said police Capt. David Dalcamo.

Police are releasing few details about the shooting that is being investigated as an attempted homicide.

Dalcamo would not say if they have any suspects.

“Burglary and robbery are not motives,” Dalcamo said. No drugs or related paraphernalia were found in the house.

The woman was shot one time and lost a lot of blood, police said, but managed to call 911 about 4:46 a.m. Butler Fire Department and Butler Ambulance Service crews were first there and treated her. The rescuers had to cut a breathing tube for her, authorities said.

Police were unable to speak to the woman before she was taken by ambulance to AGH. Police noted that due to the fog, a medical helicopter was unable to fly her to the hospital.

Investigators said the woman lives alone in the single-family house, which was not ransacked. Police believe she was shot intentionally.

Anyone with any information about the shooting is asked to call police at 724-287-7743.
