Seneca Valley passes budget with tax hike

JACKSON TWP — The Seneca Valley School Board Monday night passed a $101 million budget for 2013-14 that includes a 2.75-mill property tax hike.

The board bridged a $1.4 million budget deficit by creating new revenues and cutting back on expenditures, including cuts to personnel.

The district is expected to save $227,000 by not replacing three teachers who are retiring. The district also could save nearly $197,000 by replacing 14 other retiring teachers with younger teachers who will receive lower salaries.

In addition, the board plans to furlough 1½ positions on the secondary campus, while two secondary teachers affected by cuts in the science and English departments will move elsewhere in the district.

The total the district will save is nearly $756,000 in personnel moves with a mix of retirements, furloughs and cuts.

The current year’s budget, which will expire at the end of this month, is $97.4 million with a property tax rate of 110 mills.

The budget passed with board member Eric Gordon being the only dissenter. Board members Kelly Kopera and James Welsh were absent.
