BUTLER TWP — Union workers at the Sunnyview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center have not voted on whether to accept Butler County’s request to reopen their contract.

Nurse’s aide Kevin Schreffler, who is the union steward for roughly 200 workers, said at the Sunnyview board meeting Thursday that the union members would meet to discuss ways to cut costs.

The union would then meet with the county, which would request concessions.

County Commissioner Bill McCarrier, board chairman, said in an interview that he hopes the union membership would make a decision at some point.

“Eventually, they’re going to have to put it to a vote,” he said.

Sunnyview is projected to lose $1.5 million this year.

County officials want to reopen a four-year pact with SEIU Healthcare, a division of the Service Employees International Union, that ends Dec. 31, 2014, to reduce the nursing home’s costs.

The contract, which covers licensed practical nurses and nurse’s aides, gives workers a 3 percent pay hike each year.

The 13 registered nurses at Sunnyview belong to another union.
