SUMMIT TWP — An out-of-control pickup truck slammed into the side of the Herman Volunteer Fire Company Wednesday afternoon.

Investigators believe the driver, Edward Grenet of Fallaker Road, might have had a medical issue that caused the collision.

“If that’s the case, there likely won’t be any charges involved,” said state police Trooper Michael Lewis.

Grenet, whose age was not available, was flown by medical helicopter to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. His condition was not immediately available.

Grenet, head of maintenance at Summit Academy, had been driving a Silverado 4-by-4 owned by the school east on Herman Road around 2 p.m.

The vehicle, which was loaded with tubing and other plumbing supplies, went out of control in front of the fire station and hit a full-sized fire hydrant that had been planted in a flower bed for decorative reasons since the late 1990s.

The truck — dragging the hydrant under it — continued forward, hitting the side of the station. Witnesses said the tires continued to spin after the truck was stopped by the building. Shreds of the tires were sent flying all over the parking lot and road.

Dave Barry, director at the fire department, said it was not immediately clear if any damage was caused to the structure.
